Five best for families in the Pacific NorthwestIf you find lake vacations bring back sweet memories of your family vacations when you were a kid, a recent article posted at www.outdoorsNW.com is sure to pique your interest. In the article, writer Amy Whitley chooses the top five lakes for kids in the Northwest -- the kinds of lakes that are perfect for those old-time family getaways.
As criteria, the writer chose lakes that are beautiful and that she thinks are relatively uncrowded with onsite or nearby lodging that ranges from camping sites to historic lodging.
The lakes chosen included:
Suttle Lake -- near the Central Oregon town of Sisters and especially good for canoes and kayaks. There's a one-hour family hike around the lake. Watercraft rentals are available and the Lodge at Suttle Lake is nearby.
Lake of the Woods -- also in Oregon, the Lake of the Woods is what the writer calls a "typical old-school lake retreat" with a marina, restaurant, rustic cabins and easily accessed from Klamath Falls or Medford.
Priest Lake -- this Idaho lake is close to the more famous Lake Coeur d'Alene, but not so crowded in summer. The swimming and water activities area all there, just with fewer people sharing them with you. Blue Marina and Resort has lodging or you can camp on one of two mid-lake islands.
Cascade Lake -- this Washington lake is in Moran State Park on Orcas Island, part of the famous San Juans. You can camp in the park or stay in bed-and-breakfasts on the island. Either way, you'll find lots of hiking trails in the state park including a hike to Mt. Constitution where you can get a view of all of the San Juans.
Lake Quinault -- This Washington lake on the Olympic Peninsula is picture-perfect with the rain forest terrain. You can stay at the famous Lake Quinault Lodge, the ideal home base for a family. There's beach access and swimming docks as well as watercraft rentals and trails nearby.
